What You Make of the World

Pansy believes that the world is a dark place full of dark people—and she says it because this is the world in which she’s lived her whole life, into which she’s grown. And it’s made her cynical. There’s no bottom, no end, everything will just keep spiraling downward without pause. Forever.

Luna frowns when Pansy tells her this, furrowing her brow and thinking. She stops braiding Pansy’s hair.

“What?” Pansy shrugs, unashamed. “It’s the truth.”

Luna shakes her head slowly. She likes the world, likes the people in it, and it makes her happy. “I think the world,” she says, “is really only what you make of it.”

Pansy snorts. “You can’t turn something that’s bad into something that’s good just by thinking about it, Lovegood. That’s not the way it works.”

“Perhaps the world is bad sometimes,” Luna acknowledges, smiling serenely, “but there’s always good in it somewhere. I like the good parts better, so I pay attention to them more.”

Pansy laughs, humorless. She has never understood Luna’s optimism—idealism. “What, so you’d rather blind yourself than see things for the way they really are?”

“Oh, no, that would be silly.”

“So is closing one eye when you need two of them to see.”

Luna giggles. “That is silly! I like having both of my eyes open.”

“But—”

“The world is a good place, for me. That’s what I’ve made of it.” She bites her lip. “I’m sad that you won’t make a good place of it, too.”

She combs the braid out of Pansy’s hair with her fingers. She wants to get it just right.

“’Won’t’?” Pansy asks after a moment.

Luna nods. “Yes. You could, if you wanted to… anyone can. I suppose it would take a little while—sometimes it’s hard to see something a different way. But you could do it.” She finishes the braid, tying off the end with a small green bow. “I believe in you.”

I have no idea what you mean when you say you've had trouble writing Luna as of late. Because you really do write her perfectly. :) OWN IT.

I believe in you.

I prefer Luna like this, not completely crazy and with a barely grounded feel to her. But still Luna.

I like her like this, too. I figure she's in Ravenclaw, so she must have a lot of sense to her, even if she sometimes goes about showing it in peculiar ways.
